Every holiday shopping season, retailers vie for our attention with the perfect gadget for him, or the sweater that she’ll love. Don’t get me wrong, “things” are truly wonderful – they keep us efficient, comfortable, lookin’ good, and make life easier. But we’re finding that the key to happiness isn’t things, but experiences, according to a recent study by San Francisco State University. In an effort to offer more personalized and heartfelt gifts, we’ve been seeing a trend that we are LOVING – the gift of travel. If you can’t afford a plane ticket or package deal, no problem. We’ve got awesome travel gift cards that can help someone take their dream getaway this year. Travel experiences make us better, happier, more inspired beings. And who doesn’t love that?

Here are the five people this season for whom travel gift cards might just be the highlight of their holidays.

  1. For the friend with everything.

You know, that person…they already have the latest tech accessories, great style, a lovely home. Sometimes you just sigh at how together they are. They’ve got a jacket for every look, deliciously scented candles, an incredible espresso machine, and the list goes on. So instead of some thing, why not try some where?

  1. For the person who has a “someday” place.

It could be that every time you watch Under The Tuscan Sun with your mom, you see the longing in her eyes, and it always ends with, “One day, I want to go there.” Or, you’ve noticed your sister has the Greek islands as her computer background and it’s at the top of her bucket list, as soon as she can just save up the money. Chances are, you have someone special in your life who has a “someday” place. Imagine the look on their faces when they see their dream trip come true.

  1. For somebody who’s struggling.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure that traveling can improve one’s psychology and give us a boost when we’re down. A little help towards a getaway can make all the difference in the world for someone who’s going through a life transition, a recent break-up, a loss, or are just a bit lost themselves. If you know someone who could use a little soul R&R, travel gift cards might make the perfect present.

  1. For the person who won’t self-spend.

My mother must have learned it from her mother, who learned from her mother. If I compliment her on an outfit, she’ll say, “Want it?” Some people (yes, you mothers!) are just ingrained to give more than they get. They will spend on others, but are thrifty towards their own needs. You’ll love seeing their face light up when you treat them to an unexpected trip.

  1. To thank someone.

If there is a special friend or loved one that has been there for you in a big way this year…as a cheerleader or supporter who in turn gave you something invaluable, then travel might be the best way to give back. It’s a special way to show your gratitude.

For more ideas on how you can give travel this year, contact us! We’d love to help you wrap up the best gift of all.

As the temperature drops, lights go up, and snow falls…we’re reminded of why we love this season. It could be the warm feeling of cozying up with a glass of wine by a crackling fire during the holidays, or traipsing through a serene blanket that reminds us of childhood snow days. Whether you prefer to be curled up indoors or flying down the slopes, our favorite picks for wintry escapes have you covered – packed with fun, nostalgia, and a whole ‘lotta jingle.

dark tours, haunted tours, ghost walks

We admit it. We’re suckers for sweet, Instagram-able chunky sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes. However, our favorite part of autumn – without question – is the ghastly delights of Hallow’s Eve. So today, as we celebrate its culmination on All Saints Day, we have gathered our favorite tricks and treats from around the world for all you daring souls full of wanderlust. From dark tours of maniacal medieval experimentation to ghost walks and voodoo, here are Shefari’s top four “tours of terror” to spook your socks off.

1. ROMAN HORRORS – Rome

Our dark Rome tour takes you on a journey back centuries to see two crypts morbidly decorated with the bones of over 11,000 bodies. The crypts stand as a reminder of the historical reverence for the afterlife. Next, walk the rooms of the little-known Criminology Museum. What began as a teaching tool of “rehabilitation” at a prison, the museum’s collection contains artifacts of execution and torture. Ask to see the macabre Milazzo Cage on this unique Rome city tour.

2. WHISPERS AFTER DARK – Paris

Just as the City of Light darkens, explore its mysterious and murky past by lamplight. This Paris walking tour sheds light on unanswered questions surrounding the Holy Grail and the violent demise of King Henri IV, to the rise of the gruesome guillotine during the French Revolution where blood streamed in the city’s popular squares. Uncover the truth about the spooky catacombs that lie beneath Paris, and the unidentified corpse found drowned in the Seine with a bizarre expression. This is a great combination of all of Paris’ most terrifying tales.

3. THE LONDON DUNGEON – London

A theatrical blend of fun and fright, this London attraction features audience interaction and performers that bring to life some of London’s most horrific past events. From wandering down alleys with rotting bodies and black rats as the Black Plague runs rampant, to the sheer terror instilled by Jack the Ripper, and a narrow escape from the Great Fire…the London Dungeon is two rides and 19 shows that make it eerily entertaining for a group.

4. SPIRITS OF NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans

This haunted New Orleans tour highlights the Creole Queen of Voodoo Marie Laveau, and this often misunderstood religious practice. Featured on American Horror Story, Marie Laveau still enthralls visitors. On this New Orleans walking tour, visit two famous “cities of the dead” – cemeteries with elaborate tombs and shrines built above ground, due to the swampy climate. Traditionally, on All Saints Day, cemeteries are filled with crowds visiting their departed loved ones. Fun extra: learn how to make your very own voodoo doll in a workshop.

The tours are truly fa-boo-lous, so give us a shout to book your very own nightmare.

1. ATHENS for… ancient sites and modern delights

As one of the oldest cosmopolitans in the world, Athens has all the ingredients to have the best girls’ getaway! This is the city that combines incredible nightlife, ancient ruins, delectable food, and amazing scenery. Whether it’s day or night, they’ve got you covered. The Athenian Riviera and the historic city center is packed with bars and clubs that serve up award-winning cocktails and leave tourists awestruck by their eclectic interior design. Enjoying yourselves here will be very easy since the libations are flowing, the music is pumping, and Greeks simply don’t know what “closing time” means! During the day, take your pick from climbing the Parthenon and walking the cobblestone streets of Plaka, to enjoying a shopping spree on Ermou Street, the 5th Avenue and Champs-Élysées of the Mediterranean. The food is always too much and too good. Taste the freshest calamari and succulent clay-pot dishes like Youvetsi and Mousaka. Surrounded by the Aegean Sea and mountains, as the Acropolis stands illuminated over the skyline, Athens will leave you pleased with its stunning scenery as well.

Shefari suggests: a frisky “Greek Lovers” tour and a one-day cruise to three islands

Croatia, the old and picturesque city of Dubrovnik

2. DUBROVNIK for… living as true Queens

By far one of the most beautiful cities in Eastern Europe, Dubrovnik will leave you wide-eyed and in awe. The city’s coastline and its unique stony architecture are breath-taking, as you truly feel you have stepped back into a medieval kingdom. Dubrovnik has even hosted the Game of Thrones cast, as its matchless beauty serves as the setting for King’s Landing! The old city is inside the famous castle, with its winding roads and endless staircases connecting shops and hotels, you won’t stop snapping photos. Its port also connects you to the islands of the infamous Dalmation Coast. You can opt to take day cruises or get away for a night or tour to enjoy the sapphire waters of Croatia. This destination is the best place to relax like royalty and soak up the striking scenery while bonding with your girlfriends.

3. PARIS for… chic boutiques and everything unique

Audrey Hepburn once said, “Paris is always a good idea,” and boy was that the truth. If you haven’t been to Paris you must go, and if you have been you know that its irresistible sophistication beckons you again. Paris is the epitome of boutique, from the quaint cafes and shops on St. Germain de Pres, to the busy roundabout at the Arc de Triumph. The city’s pulse is invigorating. Sit at the Café de Paris and people watch, taste the luscious Ladurée macaroons, hear the music from the streets of Montmartre, touch history from the entire world at the Louvre, and smell the antiquity from the books at Shakespeare and Company. Paris is for all your senses and is, in fact, always a very good idea.

Shefari suggests: a private visit to YSL’s design studio and a decadent chocolatier’s tour

Beautiful Villa Rinaldi Barbini near Asolo (Veneto, Italy). The villa is an example for a Venetian villa of the seventeenth century in the style of Palladian architecture. The Villa is standing in an idyllic landscape with vineyards.

4. TUSCANY for… Inspiration and Italian indulgences

If you’re looking for a retreat and an escape with your best gals, Tuscany is the place for you. It’s the wine, villas, rolling hills, food, and the fresh that make Tuscany a #1 spot. Tuscany is a perfect setting for so many different kinds of activities like learning how to cook, wine tasting, bike riding, a wellness retreat, or a spa getaway. The destination is true to the message of Under the Tuscan Sun…this place lifts your spirits and touches your mind soul.

5. BARCELONA for… a vibrant Catalan adventure

Barcelona is bursting with bright colors and has a buzz uniquely its own. Everything about this city seems to be alive…the energetic people, the bustling streets, the undulating buildings and walls. If you’re looking for a little revitalization, some gorgeous Gaudi architecture and bubbling Spanish cava should do the trick. Stroll Las Ramblas to take in street performers, browse lovely shops, or clink glasses of sangria at a café. Barcelona is known for its cool quirkiness, where modernism meets Gothic influences. Let this city show you that it’s the perfect place to host your next girls’ trip.
